In the 1990's, Jumanne Pitts was fortunate to be involved in the emerging Neo-Soul movement and got involved with the local poetry scene. His entry into the spoken word world resulted in his performing all over Buffalo, which lasted several years.

In 2014, inspired by the work of the late Buffalo poet Kendra Durand, Jumanne created Wordism Productions, an event planning company that hosts a monthly non-competitive open mic event for spoken word artists. At each of these events, the objective is to get a person who has never participated in an open mic be inspired to do so.
